I understand very well that you can’t win every time. I know that and appreciate it in mangas. Take for example One Piece (can’t believe I’m comparing Fairy Tail to the best manga ever written, but oh well, it suits the situation). I like One Piece and well… Luffy had to fight Crocodile 3 times before he won, but he was never humiliated. And even though he’s the main character, he’s NOT the strongest, and that’s ok. He even admitted that he was weak and trained to be stronger, but there are still lots of people who are stronger than him. I just feel that Mashima is doing the same with Lucy (in a way), she’s the main character but she’s not the strongest. That’s fine, it’s really interesting, but humiliate your character like that is really not necessary at all. Why did he do it? So that later she can be captured and then Erza, Gray and Natsu will save her? AGAIN? Won’t she ever be given a chance to fight and actually win by herself? Because I know that she’s strong and like I said in another post, she has this possibility of being one of the strongest characters due to her type of magic (which is a rare kind… And she also has the strongest keys…) but Hiro Mashima just won’t let her shine, instead, he shows us her boobs.
